Notice: Meadow Area Scheduled Water Main Flushing
To ensure the continued delivery of high-quality drinking water, Johnston County Public Utilities will be conducting routine water main flushing in the Meadow area May 13 through June 9, 2026. Flushing will be conducted in phases over a four-week period. Please refer to the Meadow Area Flushing Schedule Map to see the dates flushing will occur on your road. Flushing will typically occur on weekdays between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.
Why are we doing this?
Flushing is a critical maintenance process where we open fire hydrants to move water through the pipes at a high velocity. This "scouring" effect removes mineral sediment that naturally accumulates over time, improving water clarity and maintaining the overall health of our infrastructure.
What to Expect During Flushing?
While work is being performed, you may notice the following:
- Discolored Water: You might see "cloudy" or "rusty" water. This is caused by stirred-up sediment and is temporary.
- Pressure Fluctuations: You may experience brief periods of lower-than-normal water pressure while hydrants are open nearby.
Recommended Steps for Residents
- Check your water: Before doing laundry or using the dishwasher, run your cold water tap for 1–2 minutes to see if it’s clear.
- If you see discoloration: Run the cold water faucet in your bathtub or an outside hose bib for several minutes until the water runs clear. Avoid using hot water until the cold water is clear to prevent sediment from entering your water heater. If the water does not clear within a few minutes of running cold water, please contact our office at 919-989-5075.
- Plan ahead: If possible, set aside a supply of water for drinking and cooking before the flushing begins.
We apologize for any temporary inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience as we work to keep your water system in top shape.
