Johnston County announces next steps for Unified Development Ordinance

SMITHFIELD — Johnston County will soon release the latest draft of its proposed Unified Development Ordinance.

The County Planning Department plans to post the draft to its website, johnstonnc.gov/planning, on Aug. 4. A drop-in community meeting will follow on Sept. 9 at the Agricultural Center, with planning and consulting firm staff on hand to field questions from the public.

The Planning Board will consider the draft at its meeting on Sept. 15 and make a recommendation to County Commissioners on its adoption.

Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Oct. 5. They plan to adopt the UDO at their Nov. 2 meeting.

The dates above are subject to change.

Since its release last December, the proposed UDO has undergone multiple revisions based on concerns voiced by farmers, developers, homeowners, and others.
