Free Special Needs Occupant Stickers from the Sheriff's Office

In high-stress emergency situations, clear communication and rapid understanding are critical. To better serve and protect every member of our community, the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is offering free "Special Needs Occupant" stickers for local residents.

These decals serve as a vital alert to deputies, EMS, and fire personnel approaching a home or vehicle. They let first responders know that someone inside may require unique medical, mobility, sensory, or communication accommodations.

Why These Stickers Matter

During a crisis, flashing lights, loud sirens, and shouted instructions can easily overwhelm anyone—but for individuals with sensory or cognitive differences, these standard emergency protocols can trigger unpredictable or erratic responses.

By seeing this sticker, first responders know to adjust their approach. It helps add crucial seconds to de-escalate, exercise added patience, and provide the exact type of care the situation demands, rather than misinterpreting a medical or cognitive need as non-compliance.

Who Can Benefit?

The Sheriff's Office strongly encourages families and caregivers to utilize these stickers if someone in their household experiences any of the following:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Cognitive conditions (including Alzheimer’s and Dementia)
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Cognitive or developmental differences
  • Hearing or vision impairments
  • Mobility challenges
  • Any other special need that might affect communication or physical response during an emergency.

How to Get and Use the Sticker

  • For maximum visibility, display the sticker near the front entrance of your home (such as a front door or adjacent window) or on the rear window of your vehicles.

  • Stickers are available for free pickup directly at the Johnston County Sheriff's Office, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
