Annual Walk Aims to Raise Awareness and Prevent Elder Abuse in Johnston County
June 1, 2026
For Immediate Release:
Smithfield, NC – Johnston County Social Services will host its 11th Annual Elder Abuse Awareness Walk on Thursday, June 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Johnston County Social Services campus, located at 714 N. Street in Smithfield.
Organized by the Department's Adult Services Division, the annual event brings together community members, advocates, caregivers, and service providers to raise awareness about elder abuse and promote the safety and well-being of older adults.
For more than a decade, the Elder Abuse Awareness Walk has served as a visible reminder of the importance of recognizing, preventing, and reporting abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults. The event coincides with national efforts to educate the public about the challenges facing seniors and the role communities can play in protecting vulnerable adults.
Participants will walk around the Social Services campus and receive educational materials focused on elder abuse prevention and reporting. The event also provides an opportunity for attendees to show support for older adults, caregivers, advocates, and survivors.
Community members are encouraged to attend and help spread awareness about elder abuse. Participation is free and open to the public.
