Improvements coming to Archer Lodge road
An upcoming project will widen a 1.5-mile stretch of Covered Bridge Road,
adding a turn lane and realigning an intersection.
ARCHER LODGE — A project to widen part of Covered Bridge Road could begin as early as this fall, bringing safety and traffic improvements to the growing corridor.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to widen the road from west of Helena Lane to east of Buffalo Road — a 1.5-mile stretch.
The project will convert the existing two-lane road into three lanes, including an open center turn lane. The DOT says the changes should reduce rear-end crashes, ease congestion and improve overall traffic flow.
The plans also call for realigning South Murphrey Road and Archer Lodge Road to create a new, signalized intersection with Covered Bridge Road.
Also, the DOT will install a traffic signal at Castleberry Road and Covered Bridge Road and add turn lanes with an upgraded signal at Buffalo Road and Covered Bridge Road.
Carolina Sunrock LLC of Raleigh won the contract with a bid of $12.3 million — about 13% below the DOT’s estimate.
Construction could start as early as this fall, with completion expected by summer 2028.
