Johnston will hire government relations specialist

A government relations specialist will help push countywide regionalization
of water and sewer in Johnston.

Johnston County will hire a government relations specialist.

County Commissioners approved the position during their meeting on Jan. 20.

“I think this exactly meets the needs,” said Commissioner Patrick Harris, the board’s chairman.

The job duties are many, but in short, the government relations specialist will be the main liaison between the County and federal, state and local officials.

County Commissioners particularly want that person to work with Johnston’s towns on water and sewer regionalization.

“We need somebody working on that every day, waking up and thinking about that,” said Commissioner Butch Lawter, the board’s vice chairman. “That may not be 100% of their job, but that needs to be a large part of it initially until we get this thing moving down the road.”

In addition to serving as the County’s liaison, the person will track federal and state legislation and policy changes and push for the County’s priorities.

The salary range for the position is $85,576 to $145,480 annually.
