Commissioners to meet Monday, October 20, 2025
The Johnston County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in their meeting room in the courthouse in Smithfield.
Here’s a look at what’s on the agenda:
Commissioners might exercise their option to purchase 51 acres near Clayton for a future Johnston Community College medical campus. The land is on Johnson Estate Road just west of UNC Health Johnston’s Clayton hospital on Veterans Parkway. If Commissioners exercise the option, the County would pay roughly $4.6 million for the land.
Also on Monday, Public Utilities will ask Commissioners to support the installation of a U.S. Geological Survey monitoring station on the Neuse River near Princeton.
The County plans to build its second water plant on the Neuse near Richardson Bridge Road, and data from the USGS station would prove useful. The station will, for example, measure and record continuous data on water quantity, including depth and flow. It will also gauge water quality, including dissolved oxygen and pH.
Under a five-year agreement, the county would pay the USGS a total of $108,000, or $21,600 a year.
The Veterans Service Office will ask commissioners for permission to seek a state grant. Among other things, the office could use the grant to pay for emergency housing for veterans, pay overdue utility bills or provide transportation to medical appointments.
Parks and Open Space will ask Commissioners to sign the construction contract for phase one of Johnston Regional Park in the Cleveland community. Construction, including could begin as soon as Nov. 3.
Commissioners are likely to ask the N.C. Department of Transportation to assume maintenance of the following streets:
- Sexton Lane, Dot Drive and Isaac Lane in Godwin Chase East subdivision in Wilders Township.
- Sandcastle Lane, Flip Flop Court and Salt Life Place in Ruth Harbor subdivision in Elevation Township.
- ThumperWay in Kyli Knolls subdivision in Clayton Township.
Registrar of Deeds Craig Olive will ask Commissioners to proclaim November as Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregivers Awareness Month.
The Board will consider reappointing Wayne Langston to a two-year term on the Bentonville Firefighters Relief Fund Board.
