To Salute a Veteran, Turn On a Green Light

Johnston County encourages its homes and businesses to join Operation Green Light.

The annual salute to veterans recognizes “the importance of honoring all those who made immeasurable sacrifices to preserve freedom,” the Johnston County Board of Commissioners said in a proclamation.

Homes and businesses join the salute by displaying a green light in a window from Nov. 4 through Veterans Day, Nov. 11, though they’re welcome to do so earlier.

The county is an eager participant.

“We put green lights here on the courthouse, and there are a few neighbors of mine (where) I’ve seen green lights,” Commissioner Ted Godwin said during the board’s Oct. 6 morning meeting. “I must say it’s encouraging for veterans to see that.”

In the United States, some 200,000 members of the armed services transition to civilian life every year. And studies show that as many as 72% suffer high levels of stress during the transition and are at high risk for suicide in the first year after their military service.

“Johnston County appreciates the sacrifices of our United States Military Personnel and believes specific recognition should be granted,” Godwin and his fellow commissioners said in their proclamation.

In addition to homes and businesses, the county invites its towns to display green lights at public buildings.

“Let’s all take that to heart and put that green light out,” Godwin said.
