I have some Erosion on my Property

Erosion is a natural process whereby water or wind moves soil. If you have erosion occurring on your property, the following management practices can lessen or stop the erosion:

  • Stabilize areas draining to the point of erosion.  Establishing a healthy stand of vegetation is an excellent example of stabilization.  A healthy stand of grass slows stormwater runoff down, allowing more water to infiltrate into the soil.  More infiltration equals less runoff and less erosion.
  • Stabilize the area of erosion.  Depending on the extent of the erosion, a healthy stand of grass may work here, as well.  However, sometimes a more robust stabilization may be necessary, such as rock. If these stabilization methods don't work to fully stop the erosion, contact an engineer for guidance regarding other stabilization methods.
  • Redirect runoff.  When it rains, stormwater runoff is generated, and water flows across downstream properties.  In the County, some developments design ditches to carry the runoff, while other developments design piped stormwater systems.

If sediment from an active construction site is leaving the construction site, contact Johnston County Public Utilities.
