New Unit Strengthens Fire Investigation Services in Johnston County FM-51 is placed in service at its primary service location, Four Oaks EMS Station.

Smithfield, N.C. – Johnston County Emergency Services placed a new fire investigation unit into service Monday, expanding the County’s ability to provide around-the-clock fire investigation and specialized incident support.

The new unit, named FM-51, is supported by four newly created Fire Investigator positions. The investigators will work a rotational 24-hour shift schedule, ensuring a trained investigator is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including nights, weekends and holidays.

“This represents an important investment in the safety of Johnston County and the fire departments that serve our communities,” said Travis Johnson, Johnston County Fire Marshal. “By having a dedicated investigator available around the clock, we can provide a more immediate and consistent response while strengthening our coordination with fire departments, law enforcement and other response partners.”

FM-51 will respond to fires throughout Johnston County to conduct scene examinations and determine their origin and cause. Investigators will interview witnesses, property owners and emergency responders; document fire scenes; collect and preserve evidence; and prepare detailed investigative reports. They may also testify in court regarding their findings.

When arson or other criminal activity is suspected, investigators will collaborate with local law enforcement agencies, state partners, federal authorities and prosecuting attorneys.

In addition to investigating fires, FM-51 personnel will assist Johnston County’s contracted fire departments and other response agencies during hazardous materials releases, technical rescue operations and other complex emergency incidents.

The new unit will be based out of Four Oaks EMS Station on Boyette Road, providing a central location to service the entire county with fire investigation services.

The addition of this unit strengthens Johnston County Emergency Services’ ability to provide timely, coordinated support during fires and other emergencies while improving the resources available to local fire departments and the residents they serve.
