Clayton, N.C. – Johnston County Emergency Services (JCES) recently honored Cleveland High School staff and Wake County EMS personnel for their quick response that helped save a student’s life during a football game in October, 2025.

During the game at Southeast Raleigh High School, a Cleveland High School athlete collapsed on the field after suffering a rare cardiac event known as commotio cordis.

Cleveland High School Assistant Coach Kenny Jones and Athletic Trainer Lakindra McKnight quickly began CPR and utilized an automated external defibrillator (AED). The AED delivered a lifesaving shock, and which resulted in the student regaining a pulse.

Multiple Wake County EMS units – staffed by Casey Mason, Captain; Stephen Wilson, Paramedic; and Felix Rodriquez, Paramedic – arrived minutes later and took over advanced patient care, transporting the student to WakeMed Raleigh for treatment.

As a result of the fast actions of those on scene and the availability of the lifesaving equipment, the student survived.

“This incident is a powerful reminder that CPR training and access to AEDs save lives,” said Josh Holloman, Emergency Services Deputy Director. “The individuals recognized today acted without hesitation, using their training and available tools to make the difference between life and death.”

Cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, including athletic events, schools and community gatherings. Beginning CPR early and having access to AEDs significantly increase survival rates.

Johnston County Emergency Services extends its appreciation to Wake County EMS, Cleveland High School personnel, and Johnston County Public Schools for their professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to lifesaving care.
