Emergency Services Urges Residents to Prepare for Winter Storm Johnston County public safety personnel receive a briefing from the National Weather Service in the Johnston County Emergency Operations Center regarding the incoming winter storm.

Smithfield, N.C. – Johnston County Emergency Services is urging residents to prepare for an incoming winter storm expected to impact much of the state this weekend. Forecasts indicate the potential for hazardous travel conditions, power outages and dangerously cold temperatures.

Residents are encouraged to closely monitor local weather forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel as conditions deteriorate. Even small amounts of ice or snow can create dangerous roadways, especially on bridges and overpasses.

“Winter weather can change quickly and impact daily life in many ways, including the potential for power outages and hazardous travel conditions,” said Sandy Wood, Emergency Management Coordinator/Division Chief. “Preparing now can help keep you and your family safe if conditions worsen.”

Emergency Services recommends residents take the following actions immediately:

Prepare for potential power outages by charging phones and medical devices, having flashlights and extra batteries on hand and ensuring generators are used safely and outdoors only.

Assemble or review emergency kits including: water, non-perishable food, medications, and supplies for pets.

Check heating sources to ensure they are working properly and used safely. Never use grills, ovens or propane heaters indoors.

Protect pipes by insulating exposed plumbing and allowing faucets to drip during periods of extreme cold.

Check on vulnerable neighbors, including elderly residents and those with special medical needs. Consider pets when thinking of emergency plans.

Residents who rely on electric powered medical equipment should ensure they have a backup plan in place and communicate with caregivers or family members ahead of the storm.

Johnston County Emergency Services will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates on its social media pages as needed. Residents are encouraged to sign up for JoCo Alerts, the county’s free emergency alert system, and monitor the department's EM Alerts Dashboard for real-time information.
