Emergency Services Provides Winter Weather Response Update Ice accumulation on US 70 BUS East in Smithfield

Smithfield, N.C. - Johnston County will remain under a Winter Storm Warning as we head into Monday afternoon. Although the last remaining bands of precipitation fell overnight, our area has seen significant ice accumulation that continues to cause dangerous driving conditions.

Emergency responders have responded to 11 motor vehicle accidents over the past 48 hours due, in part, to slick roads, and while temperatures are expected to rise slightly today, travel may remain hazardous. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach their destination.

The Emergency Operations Center will remain open throughout the day and into Tuesday morning. Residents with non-emergency concerns can call (919) 989-5400.

White Flag Shelter options are still available. The County-facilitated shelter at 600 M. Durwood Stephenson Parkway in Smithfield will close today at noon. Three other shelters will be open and available throughout the evening.
