Smithfield, N.C. – Johnston County Emergency Services received a Duke Energy Storm Preparedness Grant that will help strengthen disaster preparedness efforts for some of the county's most vulnerable residents.
The $25,000 grant will be used to purchase 250 emergency preparedness kits designed to help residents better prepare for severe weather, power outages, and other emergencies. The kits will be distributed to vulnerable residents through community partnerships and outreach efforts.
Each preparedness kit will include:
- A weather radio to receive emergency alerts and weather information
- A portable fan to provide relief during extreme heat and power outages
- A cooler for storing temperature-sensitive medications
- A fire/water resistant document folder to protect important records
- A thumb drive for backing up important documents, photos, and personal information
"Preparedness is one of the most effective ways to reduce the impacts of disasters on our community," said Sandy Wood, Emergency Management Division Chief. "These kits will provide essential resources that help residents stay informed, protect important belongings, and maintain safety during emergencies."
Johnston County Emergency Services works throughout the year to educate residents about emergency preparedness and build community resilience.
