Data Sources , pg 10 Electronic copies of this document and other Johnston County health reports are available on our website wwwjohnstonnccom health Inside the SOTCH Every three years , the state of North Carolina requires Johnston County Public Health Department to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment CHNA This assessment is a collaborative process between UNC Johnston and Johnston County Public Health Department Completion of the CHNA is a process that allows community members and stakeholders to gain a better understanding of the health needs and concerns of the community During the interim two years , the health department is responsible for submitting a State of the County Health SOTCH report to the North Carolina Division of Public Health and Office of Healthy Carolinians Johnston County Health Department and UNC Johnston completed the Community Needs Assessment in 2018 To access the CHNA , visit http wwwjohnstonnccom files health CHNA 202018 pdf The submission of the 2020 SOTCH addresses the most current data related to each priority health issue along with a summary of the progress to date Although this report reflects years 2019 - 2020 , there are some categories where the most current data available is from earlier years 2PageJohnston County’s Demographic and Economic Summary 1PageHealth and Medical Care Overview of Leading Causes of Death 2 In 2019 , there were 1,633 deaths in Johnston County and the number one leading cause of death was cancer 2 The percent of deaths due to cancer , 205 , is slightly lower than that of North Carolina 208 2,3 Lung and bronchus cancer , followed by prostate and breast cancers , are responsible for the majority of the cancer deaths in Johnston County 4 The second leading cause of death , with 331 deaths , is diseases of the heart Contributing to most of these deaths were lifestyle behaviors such as tobacco use , alcohol consumption , lack of physical activity , poor nutrition , and substance abuse Early detection and prevention are the two most effective ways to decrease the cancer death rate It is projected in 2020 , there will be 1,167 new cases of cancer in Johnston County 5 Economic Glimpse ? In 2019 , there were estimated 28,284 or 136 of the population who were less than 100 of the federal poverty level 6 ? The unemployment rate in 2019 was 42 7 ? Increase the number of medical providers in Johnston County ? Expand medical student education in Johnston County ? Increase Safety Net participation to ensure that evidence - based care is planned , delivered , and promoted amongst health care providers accepting uninsured and low - income residents for preventative , acute , and chronic care ? Expand the health care provider network by offering internships , mentoring , and volunteer opportunities to local students and working with local practices and agencies Progress to Date ? 14 New providers were recruited to UNC Johnston This represents a slight decline from 17 in 2019 due to hardship imposed by COVID - 19 on meeting , touring , and visitation within the hospital ? Johnston County Public Health Department has served as a preceptorship location for 9 Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine students in 2020 ? UNC Johnston partners with Campbell University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine to provide students with a conducive learning environment in their 3rd or 4th year of medical school with hopes to retain employable providers post graduation ? The number of providers precepting students at UNC Johnston increased from 33 in 2019 to 50 in 2020 5PagePage pageNumber6? The expansion of Safety Net providers was slowed due to the Covid - 19 pandemic Heart Disease & Stroke CHNA Priority Healthy North Carolina 2020 Objectives Increase the proportion of adults who have had their blood pressure measured within the preceding 2 years and can state whether their blood pressure was normal or high Increase the proportion of adults aged 20 years and older who are aware of the symptoms of and how to respond to a heart attack and increase the proportion of eligible patients with heart attacks or strokes who receive timely artery - opening therapy as specified by current guidelines Johnston County CHNA Action Plan ? Systematically improve the outcome of stroke patients at UNC Johnston ? Inform the Johnston County workforce about the importance of health and offer prevention and education ? Conduct Faithful Families program at local faith organizations Progress to Date ? UNC Johnston’s stroke committee continues to work on processes for Primary Stroke Center Certification by the Joint Commission A site visit is planned for August or September of 2021 ? Stroke patients are now offered services at UNC Johnston - Smithfield and UNC Johnston - Clayton for stroke care ? At UNC Johnston the median time to treat patients who present with symptoms suggestive of stroke and received antithrombotic therapy in the emergency departments has been reduced ? UNC Johnston offered heart health educational talks and blood pressure screenings to the participants of Johnston Health’s worksite wellness program WellnessWorks ? In 2018 , 28 blood pressure screening events were offered ? In 2019 , 46 blood pressure screening events were offered ? In 2020 , the number of events offered decreased by 29 to 20 events , due to covid - 19 restrictions ? Faithful Families was promoted to our local faith organizations once a quarter During 2020 the health education team coordinated video conferencing health programs to meet the education requests of the community 6PagePage pageNumber7Mental Health & Substance Abuse CHNA Priority Healthy North Carolina 2020 Objective Reduce the past - year nonmedical use of prescription drugs and increase the proportion of persons who are referred for follow - up care for alcohol problems , drug problems after diagnosis , or treatment for one of these conditions in a hospital emergency department ED Johnston County CHNA Action Plan ? Expand capability to address growing mental health needs of the community ? The Opioid Task Force will host one Operation Medicine Drop event per year for the next 3 years Progress to Date ? Johnston Health applied for and obtained a Certificate of Need CON to add additional mental health beds to the facility The expansion process has been placed on hold due to financial implications and reprioritization as a result of the Covid - 19 pandemic ? The Opioid Task Force hosted an Operation Medicine Drop in October 2019 , two in July 2020 , and another in March of 2021 at different locations around Johnston County Respiratory Diseases CHNA Priority Healthy North Carolina 2020 Objective Reduce tobacco use by adults and increasing smoking cessation attempts by adult smokers Johnston County CHNA Action Plan ? Increase the number of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD patients successfully referred to a smoking cessation program by completing fax referral during patient education and faxing the form prior to patients ’ discharge ? Johnston County Health Department will offer an evidence - based smoking cessation program once per year for the next three years Progress to Date ? UNC Johnston referred COPD patients and Behavioral Health patients to a smoking cessation program at Johnston County Public Health Department prior to discharge from the hospital ? During 2020 UNC Johnston and Johnston County EMS worked to find a telehealth system that met the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act HIPAA needs of both organizations ? In 2020 , UNC Johnston’s case management team utilized a ride sharing program called Safe Ride to transport radiation and oncology patients to appointments ? Adding Safe Ride increased treatment compliance and patient satisfaction ? Johnston County WIC services expanded to include 3 new mobile sites in Clayton , Benson , and Princeton ?
