Howard Benton advised the Board that he had received a letter from Triangle J,Council of Governments relative to participation in a federal nutrition program to help feed theCountys elderly people Commissioner Benton explained that this program would provide hot meals toelderly people over 60 years old at little cost to the CountyNo official action was taken by the Board at this time7 Night Depository for MagistratesJames C Woodard, Clerk of Superior Court, appeared before the Board regarding money collectedby the County magistrates over-the week -end period Mr Woodard explained that the magistrates some-times collected and had on hand large amounts of money and,they had become quite concerned about thisMr Woodard advised the Board that he had checked into the cost and the maximum cost would be 25000and asked the Board for permission to have a drop -in night depository installed so that the magistratescould deposit money into the Clerks office over week -end periods when the Clerks office is closedCommissioner Howard Benton moved that Mr Woodard be authorized to have a night drop -indepository installed in the Clerks office provided the cost does not exceed recreationMr Brown stated that several schools had indicated interest in paved multi - purpose play areas and tenniscourts and wanted to know if this money could be used to provide more playground equipment and facilitiesfor recreation at the schoolsThe Board indicated that they think communities and schools need to present plans for recreationprograms and that they would work with them through the CoordinatorThe Board of Commissioners asked Mr Brown to talk with other schools and communities aboutrecreation programs and report back to the Board10 Lions Club - Plans for Civic CenterMr Doc Woodall, President, Smithfield Lions Club, came before the Board stating that theSmithfield Lions Club was looking for a site to build a Civic Center Youth Center Mr Woodall saidthe Lions Club wanted to purchase the property on the hospital road adjacent to the Lions Club PicnicParkThe Board of County Commissioners commended Mr Woodall and the Smithfield Lions Club andvoiced favorable approval of this project, however, informed him that this matter would have to betaken to the Johnston Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees11 PrincetonRescue Squad RequestMr Robert Long and Princeton Mayor William Earl Ormond appeared before the Board representingthe Princeton Rescue Squad Mr Long explained to the Board that the Princeton Rescue Squad had re-organized and are in the process of trying to buy the Old Princeton Theatre Building Mr Long andMayor Ormond asked the Board of Commissioners for financial assistance to help with the purchase andthe renovation of this building Mayor Ormondfurther explained that back taxes were due on this buildingwhich the rescue squad will have to pay if they purchase this building Mayor Ormond asked if theycould get any relief on these back taxes and also the penalty that has accumulatedAfter discussion, Commissioner Freddie Adams moved that the Princeton Rescue Squad be granted2,50000 to help in the above project purchase and renovation of building
