page 508; date; March 4, 1985Jim MooreComplaintRandy Fowler, Acting Hospital Administrator, Melvin Edwards, Member,Hospital Board of Trustees, and Dr Thomas Cheek, Chief, Johnston Memorial MedicalStaff, came representing Johnston Memorial Hospital in regards to the Jim Moorecomplaint of March 4, 1985Dr Qheek made the following presentationJOHNSTON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, SMITHFIELD, NORTH CAROLINAPatient presented in thePatientCase ReviewThe following casewas extensively reviewed asthe monitor The patient went into cardiac arrest,a result of anewspaper articlealleging poor patientcare in the ERpatient during his two -dayReviewof the patientsrecord demonstratesthat the patient is a chronicservice ofrepeat visitorto the emergencyroom with various andsundry ailmentshemodynamic arteriogramsPatientwas seen in the ER two days priorto his admission EKG at thattime demonstrated some changeswhich were non - diagnostic in naturePatient presented in theER with continuous chestpain Patientwas seenimmediately and connected tothe monitor The patient went into cardiac arrest,was successfully resuscitated,condition stabilized andpatient was transferredto the intensive care unit Thepatient during his two -daystay went intocongestiveheart failure and was transferred to Wake Medical Centerunder theservice ofDr Cheeley on June 19, 1982Patient was transferredbecause of theneed forhemodynamic arteriogramsii564July 1, 1985 ContinuedReview of patients medical record indicates that a few years ago this patientcomplained of having chest pain on and off and was sent to Duke Medical Center foradditional testing which were reported normal at that timeFurther review of the record demonstrates that there is no problem noted on theJune 15, 1982 EKGOn each visit to the ER, the patient was evaluated, treated and referred to hisfamily physician for follow -upwMembers of executive management report that they have received contra-j dictory information from the patient regarding the quotations in the newspaper1it is the unanimous consensus of the Quality Assurance Committee thatthis patient received care in a timely manner, and that the care he receivedwas properLn reference to a letter from Dr Cheely dated March 22, 1985 requestedby the Chief of Staff, Dr Cheely writes that he nor his associates recallihaving made a recommendation to the patient that he file a lawsuitFurther review of the record fails to demonstrate a visit to the ER at430 AM at which time the patient alleges to have had to wait even thoughthere were no patients in the ERAfter review of the complete record very extensively before and afterhis MI, the committee finds no indication what so ever to suspect an MI priorto his June 17, 1982 admission Again, the committee agrees that this patientreceived adequate medical care in a timely mannerThe committee also recommends that a copy of this report be forwardedto the Medical Staff, Board of Trustees and recommends through appropriatechannels that the County Commissioners should receive a report of the committeesfindings The extensive detail of medical information examined during thiscase review process has been omitted from this summary report to comply withlaws protecting the privacy of patient informationThe Chairman thanked Dr Cheek and the hospital officials for this in- Iformation;
