May 26, 1987The Johnston County Board of Commissioners reconvened in regular sessionTuesday, May 26, 1987, at 7 oclock pm, Commissioners Room, Johnston County Court -house, Smithfield, North Carolina, with the following members presentNorman C Denning, Chairman, frank B Holding, Vice Chairman, James WCash, Howard Benton and John M Booker, DVMMembers Absent NoneAlso present Richard B Self, County Manager, Eleanor N Creech, Clerk to theBoard and W R Britt, County AttorneyThe Chairman called the meeting to order and the following business wastransacted1 Emergency Management CoordinatorMayor Ernest Wilkinson, Jr, Town of Kenly, met with the board on behalf ofthe municipalities, asking the Board of Commissioners to include in the new budgetfunds to employ a full -time Emergency Management Coordinator for the county MayorWilkinson stressed the importance of an Emergency Coordinator and that this personneeds to be a well qualified professional in the field of Emergency ManagementThe board acknowledged Mayor Wilkinsons request and agreed to give thismatter consideration2 Room Occupancy and Tourism Development TaxDennis Davis, President, Greater Smithfield -Selma Area Chamber of Commerce,motel owners, town mayors, and other interested citizens, met with the board supportinga bill introduced by Representative George Brannan to allow Johnston County to levy aRoom Occupancy and Tourism Tax Mr Davis emphasized that every county along 1 -95in North Carolina has a b i l l in the Legislature to enact this same tax to promote traveland tourism, we want to compete with Fayetteville and Lumberton 1 -95 tourism hasbecome a big business, and we felt like we should not be left outThe board discussed the proposed bill at Length;
