33Meeting of Board of Commissioners £or the County of JohnstonSeptember 21, 1962A special meeting of the Board of County Commissioners was held in the CommissionersRoom at 830 A M, Friday, September 21, 1962Members present as follows Henry M Johnson, Chairman, J D Bailey, R G Gurley,Floyd C Price, Sr and Frank B HoldingAbsent NoneThe meeting was called to order by the Chairman, Mr Henry M JohnsonW H Britt, Auditor, was designated as acting clerk in the absence of 11 G Massey,ClerkChairman Johnson reported to the Board that Mr Thomas L Upchurch, Tax Collector,since the meeting yesterday had contacted and informed him that he, after careful con-sideration, had changed his mind about continuing as Tax Collector and asked that hisresignation as submitted be accepted and that the action of the Board of the September20th meeting be rescindedMr Gurley moved that the action taken at the September ZQth meeting requestingand allowing Mr Upchurch to remain until December 1st or untiT a Successor could beappointed be rescinded and that his resignation as submitted be accepted The motionwas seconded by Mr Holding The motion carried without a dissenting voteAfter consulting with Mrs Elizabeth G Lane, Bookkeeper in the Tax CollectorsOffice, the Board upon a motion by Mr Bailey, seconded by Mr Gurley, unanimouslyappointed Mrs Lane Acting Tax Collector until such time as a competent and agreeableperson could be appointed as Tax Collector; and ordered that Mrs Lane be paid at therate of 40000 per month for the time th,t she is acting collector and when a collectoris appointed, her salary be reduced to 30000 per monthMr R G Gurley made a motion that Daniel G Matthews, C P A, of Smithfield,N C be employed at 65000 per day, the total not to exceed 30000, to make a completeaudit of the Tax Collectors Office with the assistance of the County Auditor and hisstaff The motion was seconded by Mr Bailey The vote in favor was unanimousThe Board directed that the Tax Office be closed for the audit and the length of?Itime was left to the discretion of W H Britt, auditorA motion to adjourn was made by Mr Frank B Holding and seconded by Mr R GGurley and the Board adjournedjI?
