187Meeting of Board of Commissioners of the County of JohnstonFebruary 19, 1958The Board of County Commissioners of Johnston County reconvened in specialsession on February 19, 1958, in the Register of Deeds Office, at 1100 A M, withthe following members presentH M Johnson, Chairman, R G Gurley, Floyd C Price, Sr, and J D BaileyAbsent Frank B HoldingThe following business was transacted1 Upon the recommendation of R G Gurley, the following motion was adoptedOn a motion made by R G Gurley, seconded by Floyd C Price, Sr, it wasmoved that Mrs Lulu A Jolliff, Superintendent of the Welfare - Department, beauthorized to expend an amount not to exceed 52500 for the purpose of employinga case worker assistant for certifying applicants to receive surplus food commodit-ies2 After hearing a request from W B Oliver, A E Peedin, JA Peedin, W SPeedin, and approximately ten other citizens of the county for relief from addition-al overflow of water from and around the location of the electronics plant in SelmaTownship, which in the opinion of the group present would cause considerable damageto their crop land, the following motion was adoptedOn a motion made by Floyd C Price, Sr, seconded by R G Gurley, it wasmoved that the following resolution be adopted, and copy transmitted to HaroldMakepeace, Secondary Roads Officer, Raleigh, North CarolinaRESOLUTIOiNWhereas, the State Highway Commission is now in the process of digging acanal from the site of the electronics plant located in Selma Township, JohnstonCounty, North Carolina, in a southernly direction to a point just beyond U SHighway # 70 -A,And whereas, the water from said canal will have a tendency to overflow onthe lands of private property owners which, in the opinion of said property owners,will damage their crop land,Now therefore, be it resolved by the Board of County Commissioners of JohnstonCounty in special session assembled1 That the ,State Highway Commission is hereby requested to take necessarysteps in order that the water from said canal shall not overflew upon the landsof private property owners2 That said Board of County Commissicners hereby request the State HighwayCommission to extend said canal from U s Highway # 70 -A to U S Highway # 70to eliminate this problem3 Subsequent to Chairman H M Johnson giving a recount of what transpired ata meeting on February 17, 1958 in Raleigh, North Carolina with Governor Hodges andthe Chairmen of the Board of County Commissioners of each county included in theEastern Carolina Housing Authority and which is specifically stated in hismemorandum of information for the County Commissioners dated February 17, 1958,which set forth the possibilities of irregular transactions occurring in the EasternCarolina Housing Authority, the following motion was RdoptedOn a motion made by J D Bailey, seconded by R G Gurley, it was moved thatCommissioner Floyd C Price, Sr be appointed a member of the committee to investig-ate transactions of the ECHAThere being no further business, the following motion was adoptedOn a motion made by Floyd C Price, Sr, seconded by J D Bailey, it wasmoved that the meeting be adjourned
