payment of 99-81,representing taxes in full through 1956, conveying 18 of an acre and Lot No 13Washington Heights, Clayton Township, foreclosed in the name of Clara Cook, F R# 6, page 12 Upon the recommendation of Rhetta Martin, the following motion was adoptedOn a motion made by H M Johnson, seconded by R G Gurley, it was moved thatquit -claim deed be made to Gilmore Farmer upon the payment of 8041, representingtaxes in full through 1956, conveying Lot 38 of the Vinson sub - division, WilsonsMills Township, foreclosed in the name of Cannie and Julia Farmer, F R # 5,page 33 After hearing a report from J D Pegram, Superintendent Welfare Department,t he following motion was adoptedOn a motion made by Floyd C Price, Sr, seconded by H M Johnson, it wasmoved that four fire extinguishers be purchased for the Johnston County BoardingHome at a total cost of 410600F Upon the recommendation of R G Gurley, the following motion was adoptedGn a motion made by R G Gurley, seconded by H M Johnson, it was movedthat J DPegram, Superintendent Welfare Department, be paid 1000 to equalizehis pay in accordance with merit system requirements5 On a motion made by R G Gurley, seconded by H M Johnson, it was moved thatSheriff B AHenry be authorized and directed to sell in accordance with law thefollowing confiscated goods26 - 100 lbs bags of sugar3 gas water pumps1 Jeep2 Truck covers6 Ordered that J P Rogers Construction Company be paid 0770500 contractprice for the erection and completion of livestock arena located on Highway # 301,Smithfield Township, in accordance with legislative enactment of the 1957 GeneralAssembly7 on a motion made by R G Gurley, seconded by H M Johnson, it was moved thatthe State Highway and Public Works Commission be requested to hard - surface thatcertain road in Selma Township, described as followsBeginning at the Wendell road and runs thence to the Selma Mill Village andis known as West Oak Street Extension, and being a distance of 2 milePetition enclosed with this order For reference see Rev J W Powers,Selma, North Carolina8 The following road petition requesting addition and maintenance to theJohnston County Road System was filed with the BoardE N Booker Selma Township Selma, N CBeginning at Percy Flowers road and runs about 1200 feet to Oak Street,known as Oak Street Extension, and being a distance of 1200 feet9 On a motin made by J D Bailey, seconded by H M Johnson, it was moved thatthe following resolution be adopted119 ,May 6,1957 ContWhereas, a group of interested citizens appeared before the Board of CountyCommissioners at their regular first Monday meeting in May in behalf of theBentonville Battleground, the last great battle of the ;Civil War;Whereas the discussion for the group was led by H V Rose and 19 R Britt,who stated that an option had been obtained for fifty -one 51 acres of land whichIncluded the Harper House, used as a hospital during the battle, the cemetery,and the heart of the battlefield itself, for 50,000, said option to expireSeptember 1, 1957;Whereas approximately 8000 has been received in cash and pledges, and thatthe General Assembly of the State of North Carolina, is being asked for anappropriation to help in completing the project and;Whereas the Board of County Commissioners is respectfully urged and requestedto approve and to support the project financiallyUpon the foregoing, the following resolution was adopted Resolved that theBoard of Commissioners of Johnston County go on record as wholeheartily approvingthe project and to render financial aid to the Bentonville Battleground Associationwhen needed, after appropriate legislation is enacted10 Whereas, W B Godwin, of Pine Level, has requested the Board to withdraw arequest for tobacco allotment amounting to 75 acre on the Produce Market propertyconsisting of 10 acres,And whereas, after due investigation at the Johnston County at the JohnstonCounty ASC office by Commissioners H M Johnson and J D Bailey, it was determinedthat the tobacco allotment could not be withdrawn from the land;Now therefore, be it resolved that W G Massey, Clerk, notify Mr Godwinthat they will not be able to honor his request, as according to the A S C rulingsthe tobacco goes with the land and can not be released11 The request of William B Wellons, Smithfield, North Carolina, representing theJohnston County Bar Association, for two tables, sixteen straight chairs and onerevolving chair for the court room was referred to the Building and Grounds Committeecomposed of Commissioners Floyd C Price, Sr, H M Johnson and JP Bailey12 The request of L P Creech, Veterans Service Officer, for additional quartersamounting to a total of 5250 was deferred pending investigation by members of theBoard13 Jiggs Broadwell, Civil Defense Director, gave a verbal report on the activit-ies and status of the civil defense program, and invited the Board to inspect therescue vehicle, which had arrived and was housed by the Town of Smithfield inaccordance with an agreement with the Town Commissioners14 The application of Alphonzo Eason for Constable of Wilders Township was orderedfiled with W G Massey, Clerk15 Ordered that the Bond Continuation Certificate of Grover Russell Britt, DeputyTax Collector, for the year ending May 1, 1958 and surety bond of Mrs HelenThompson Herring, Deputy Clerk of the Superior Court, for an indefinite term beapproved16 On a motion made by Floyd C Price, Sr, seconded by H M Johnson, it wasmoved that the following resolution adopting Schedule B licenses, with the exceptionof a license on mule and horse dealers, which is hereby specifically exempt from thefollowing resolutionWHEREAS, it is provided in Chapter 158, Public Laws of 1939 in an act entitledThe Revenue Act of 1939 , under Article II, Section B ,License Taxes of saidChapter, as amended, that the counties of North Carolina or any of them may imposeand levy a county license or privilege tax for the privilege of carrying on thebusiness, exercising the privilege of doing the act named therein, beginning June 1,1957, and ending May 31, 1958;WHEREAS, the County of Johnston, a body politic and corporate in the Stateh of North Carolina, by and through its Board of Commissioners desires to impose andlevy said license and privilege taxes in Johnston County for said tax year 1957 -50in strict accordance with the provisions of said Article II, Schedule B , and toimpose and levy said taxes in amounts to the full extent and limit allowed andauthorized under said Article II, Schedule 11 0NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVEDThat the Board of Comissioners of Johnston County do hereby impose and levyin and for the County of Johnston, North Carolina, for the tax year beginning June 1,1957 and ending May 31, 1958, the license and privilege taxes provided for andauthorized under the provisions of Article II, Schedule B of Chapter 158, PublicLaws of 1939, as amended, and which under said Article the Counties of North120May 6, 1957 ContICarolina are authorized and empowed to impose, levy and collect; and be it resolvedfurther that said Board of Commissioners does hereby impose and levy said licenseand
