Request a Roadkill Cleanup

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for picking up roadkill or a dead animal. You can submit a request either by phone or online.

How to Report Roadkill to NCDOT

• By Phone:  
  Call the NCDOT Customer Service Hotline at 1-877-DOT-4YOU (1-877-368-4968). The hotline is staffed on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  
  
• Online:
  Visit the NCDOT Contact Us page. Scroll down to the "Report a Problem to NCDOT" section and select "Highway Debris/Dead Animals" to submit a digital service request.
  
  

Important Guidelines to Know Before You Report

• State-Maintained Roads Only:
  NCDOT is only responsible for removing dead animals from state-maintained roadways and rights-of-way, specifically when the roadkill is causing a traffic or safety concern.
  
  
• Local Municipal Streets:
  The NCDOT does not service local town streets or neighborhood roads.  If the location of the road kill is in Clayton, located on a local municipal street within the town limits, you will need to contact the Town of Clayton Public Works department.
  
  
• Private Property:
  NCDOT will not remove dead animals from private property or driveways. In North Carolina, property owners are legally responsible for disposing of dead animals on their own land (either by burying the animal or hiring a licensed private wildlife control agent).
