How to Update Your Name or Address for Voter Registration in Johnston County

 

The methods available for updating your voter registration depend entirely on whether you are changing your address, your name, or both.

 

Method 1: Online (Address Changes ONLY)

 

If you are an existing customer with a North Carolina driver's license or DMV-issued ID, you can update your address quickly online.

• Visit the official NCDMV Voter Registration Portal (this is a free service powered by PayIt).
  
  
• Follow the prompts to verify your identity and submit your new residential or mailing address.
  
  
• Important: You cannot use the NCDMV online portal to change your legal name.

 

Method 2: By Mail (Name and Address Changes)

 

Because name changes require a physical signature for verification, they must be done via paper form. You can update both your name and your address using the mail.

1. Use Your Existing Voter Card: If you still have your current Johnston County voter registration card, you can simply fill out the update section on the back, sign it, and mail it in.
   
   
2. Use a New Application: Alternatively, download and print the standard NC Voter Registration Application from the State Board of Elections or Johnston County website. Check the box indicating you are updating your record, fill out the relevant fields, and sign it.

Method 3: In-Person (Name and Address Changes)

 

You can also drop off your updated paperwork or request a form in person.

• Board of Elections Office: Visit the Johnston County Board of Elections at 205 South Second Street, Smithfield, NC 27577. Their office is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  
  
• Early Voting (Same-Day Registration): You can update your name and address in person at any designated Johnston County early voting site during the official Early Voting period.
  

 

Important Deadlines and Exceptions

 

• The 25-Day Rule: For your update to be processed in time for a standard polling place visit, your mail-in form must be postmarked, or hand-delivered to the Board of Elections, no later than 25 days before Election Day. (Online NCDMV updates must also be submitted by this deadline).
  
  
• Missed the Deadline? If you miss the 25-day cutoff, you must utilize Same-Day Registration during the Early Voting period.
  
  
• Election Day Moves: If you moved within Johnston County more than 30 days before the election but forgot to update your address, you will not be turned away.
