Tuscarora Nation Mural in Smithfield
Community members and the Tuscarora Nation of NC gathered in Smithfield to dedicate a mural honoring the Tuscarora people and their lasting ties to this area. The Tuscarora Nation mural is located at 134 S. Third Street in Smithfield.
The program started at the Smithfield Performing Arts Center and opened with a traditional song by Timothy Jacobs, followed by remarks from Robert Chavis of the Wolf Clan. Duane Brayboy delivered a moving address in the Tuscarora language about the tribe’s history, while Donnie McDowell provided an English interpretation of the reading. Beaver Clan Chief Stan Locklear offered powerful remarks, grounding the event in both cultural tradition and present-day leadership. The group later gathered at the mural site before closing with another song from Mr. Jacobs.
The mural, created by Brian Lewis (JEKS ONE), features the likeness of Jacobs surrounded by symbols that reflect the Tuscarora identity, including elements of nature, traditional clans, and representations of unity and life.
The NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and America250NC, along with Johnston County partners, provided support for the program. The project stands as a lasting recognition of the Tuscarora people, past, present, and future.
