Water Main Rupture Prompts Conservation Request in Three Johnston County Water Districts

June 8, 2026

For Immediate Release:

Smithfield, NC – Earlier this evening, a water main ruptured during project-related utility work at the Neuse River Bridge reconstruction site on US Highway 301 in Smithfield.

Johnston County Public Utilities requests the cooperation of customers in our Ingrams, Meadow, and Southeast Lowgrounds Water Districts to employ voluntary water conservation measures and limit non-essential water use over the next 24 hours.

This is a notice of temporary water shortage while normal operations are restored.

We would like to remind all customers of the County’s mandatory year-round conservation policy. The policy allows for alternate day irrigation for in-ground irrigation systems and hose-end sprinklers based on the customer’s address. Odd number street addresses should water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, while even number street addresses should water on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. No irrigation is allowed on Mondays. Pool filling days should correspond with designated irrigation days.

Please visit our website at www.johnstonnc.gov/utilities for the full policy and water conservation suggestions. Contact Johnston County Public Utilities at 919-989-5075 with any questions. We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely appreciate your cooperation.
